Cultural Awareness--- Go to western restaurants with Grade 12 Mentors

In the 18th of December, we went to the Swiss restaurant under the Eastern plaza. I was a member of Sherry's group, and the group has Sherry, Viola, Soda , Tim, Amy , Sam , John , Victor , May , and me.

First, we decided to go to the underground station by bus. Then we took the underground to Xinjiekou at about 7a.m with Grade 12 Mentors. We waited for the Grade 12 Mentors for half an hour. But it didn’t matter. We chatted and took many photos in the Swiss restaurant. We visited the restaurant of the Swiss style, with many Swiss things. We ware love this style. We had chosen this restaurant because they said the Swiss food was wonderful.

The menus were completed one by one. The Swiss food are great different from Chinese food. The Swiss food always sweet and sour and the quantity is less than Chinese food. In fact, I like Swiss food better because it is really delicious I think. The environment of the restaurant is very peaceful I think.

Everyone there is very quite and very polite. They also eat food quietly. The service is very good. The waitresses helped us to take group photos and were very polite. If I have the chance, I will go there for the second time and I will recommend it to my friends.

Arts & Design--- Go to an Exhibition with Ms. Hadley's class

On Dec.4 2008, Ms. Hadley took us to visit a very famous Chinese sculptor's exhibition named “the Sculpture Exhibition of Wu Weishan”. This exhibition was shown to the public at Nanjing University’s Art Building. The Sculpture was being shown. The artwork was contemporary.
The artwork is made by one artist. He is a very famous painter, a world cultural celebrity. The artist is Wu Weishan , who is currently director of the Nanjing University Sculpture Arts Research Center. He is one of the foremost contemporary sculptors in China today. Not only was he the first Asian to be invited to the venerable Royal Society for British Sculptors, but also during his extraordinary artistic career he has been commissioned to make sculptures of over 2000 heads of state, scientists, artists, and other prominent figures.

Through all the exhibition I have seek a lot of things, for example, their connotations, their ways of how to make them, their value to the public. My favorite one is “Qi Baishi”. This sculpture was made by Wu Weishan in 2004. The shape of it is a person who is an artist. The artwork has many different lines, and the color of it is cyan. When I touched it , I felt it was very smooth. It is made of bronze. The subject of this artwork is a person, with a hand holding his charm and the other one in front of his body. The man has a pair of glasses and a long goatee. That made me feel that this person is so serious.

When I first saw this artwork, I felt he was a very serious person. I know it is a very carefully made artwork and it is a sculpture of a famous artist, and this artwork made me feel the historic and vicissitcles. He put on his charm, with one hand in front of his body. He has a crutch, and this makes me feel it must be a scholar with much knowledge. The artwork also makes me think about a scholar of previous years. An old person is thinking of many things. This artwork reminds me to think of some old scholars in old school.

The artwork of Qi Baishi reminds me of my old grandpa, who is a truly old scholar and has much knowledge. I think this artwork of Qi Baishi let us know the history of humans and the vicissitcles of old classic things. This artwork maybe reminds the history, and let us know the history of the artist.I like this artwork, because it is very classic and very meaningful. I really like the feeling of being in a history area. I think an old scholar who has much knowledge is very smart. It makes me feel I can enter 1900s and gives me the feeling of old scholars. It does not show the rational way of sculpture-----make everywhere on one artwork so specific, and make each details so similar with the real thing. It could let us learn the artistic knowledge and cultivate my sentiment. That exhibition was necessary I think. I will never forget this exhibition.
