GCA ~~

I came to GCA in the September of 2008. I graduated from my middle school--NFLS and I wondered to go to a school which has lots of activities. Luckily, I found GCA. I made lots of friends here. GCA is really a family and everyone here are very helpful and friendly. The teachers here are more understandable and they really helped me a lot~~

Community Involvement & Employability Skills--volunteer for the fashion show and the bookshop

10 hours due by May 4

I was a stage backdrop artist and helped to take teachers and parents to the Third Annual Fashion Show in GCA at night, and I got 5 hours of volunteer work for doing these work totally.

In the afternoon of the fashion show, Ms.Hadley gave our volunteers a big black curtain. We need to fix up the letters on it. The letters were done by some volunteer before. Letters were big, that is very difficult for us to do. First, we think about to use the double side tape, but it doesn’t have mucosity. Then we asked for Ms.Hadley to gave us some staplers. We use the staplers to fix up the letters. The curtain was so big, it cost us a lot of time to finish. When we finish our work and the work is done well, we will be very proud of ourselves. I was tired but however, I was happy. At night, many teachers and students with their parents come to see this fashion show. I was the volunteer, I was polite enough leading all the people to their own seats. When the show began, all of us were excited. All the models were charming enough, and they were successful to show themselves in this fashion show.

During the May holiday, on the afternoon of April 30th, I also did some volunteer work in the bookshop where on the Beijing Road and I got 5 and an half hours volunteer time for it.

I went to bookshop to help them carry and classify the new books, from 12:30pm to 6:00pm. At the beginning, I carried dozens of books into the bookshop, and then I classify these books. It was a difficult job to do, because books were in a mess, we should divided these books into many different kinds –literature, romance, philosophical, etc, and some different language of books. Our have three clerk and I to fix up these books, we divided into two groups, two people each group. I classify books, and the other clerk recorded the name of each book. Few hours later, we put all the new books we finished on the bookshelf, at about 6:00pm, I have finished my duty of volunteer. My arm was aching enough, but I was also happy. When I saw the books on the bookshelf, I could thought ” that wonderful books was classify and fix up by me”. It was a sense of proud.

I think doing volunteer work is very useful in our future life, it is the best way to experience what taking a job is like and what will we be responsible in. We shouldn’t be afraid of the difficulties. We need to face these difficulties more confidently. It will help us to overcome them and achieve our own goals.

Public Events

On February 2nd 2009, My mother and I went to Fu Zimiao to see the public lantern show. This lantern show was in the evening, from 7:00pm.to 10: 00pm. In the Spring Festival, that Public Show was opened to everyone, each person should pay 40 RMB to see the show.

I have heard from my friends that lantern show in Fu Zimiao was fantastic and many people went there, also that time was the Spring Festival, I have enough time to go there, so I chose that exhibition to see.

At 8:00pm, we arrived there and I saw many bright lanterns, they were magnificent and attractive. The night scene is charming enough, and gave me the feeling of flourishing and the scene of bustle and excitement in the Spring Festival. There are so many people here and I am afraid that I will fall down any time.

There are many kinds of lanterns there, some lantern looked like people and some lanterns looked like animals, they all very grateful. The Lantern show is the traditional activity that China had for thousands of years. There is another reason that I went there. That’s to know more about the Chinese culture. As a Chinese, it is our responsibility to know about our own culture.

I really like this exhibition, it attracted me a lot. It represent the culture of China . It has a high value of art. This experience I will never forget , I wonder to see this exhibition next year.

Participate in a Service Activity organized by a GCA teacher

On the morning of the 18th in April, each group of fundraising should send one or two people to follow some French exchange students in NFLS or some teachers in GCA to make some cuisine. Amy and I went to GCA for my group on that morning. Our cooking project was Muffins of banana and chocolate. There were 10 members in our group, and we came from different classes in Grade 10. Melissa is the French student who was in charge of teaching us how to make muffins. She is a lively girl. At the beginning, some of us went to buy some material for this cooking. We needed to buy 6 bananas, 4 eggs, 160g of butter which should be saltish, 140g of brown sugar, 300g of flour, 2 packets of yeast, two boxes of chocolate. Then we used that to make 10 to 12 muffins.

We spent nearly one and an half hour to buy all of things we needed. Then we came back to GCA and we started cooking. First, we took a big bowl and mixed sugar and butter until the mixture became a kind of cream. Second, we smashed the bananas and added them with the eggs to the first mixture and stirred them up. Then, little by little, we added the flour. The cream shouldn’t have hard small things, and the mixture must be really smooth, and at the same time, we should add the yeast too. Later, with small cake pans, we used our fingers to butter them. Melissa told us we mustn’t skip that part and the layer of butter in the cake pans was important, because when the cakes were being cooked, they shouldn’t stick in the bottom. We put one layer of the mixture we had made before, and in the middle we put 5 pieces of chocolate and then another layer of the mixture. It mustn’t overcome the cake pans, just cover 3/4. At last, we put them in the oven. It was finished.20 minutes later that the muffins were took away from the oven. They smelled good, and I tasted one--fantastic~

I felt a little tired to make them, however, it was worth. I love cooking, and I want to get more chances like that. During this cooking, I began to know the importance of the teamwork. Teamwork is very important. Everybody knows we need to do a good cuisine, but how can we do it? There are 10 members in our group. If we cooperate carefully, we can get the success easily. We cooperate, so we have made a good cuisine.

Religion Service

On the afternoon of December 13th, my classmates, my planning teacher Ms. Bartell and I went to the Christ church on Mochou Road. On that day, we met at 2:00pm, at the gate of the church. I saw many people there. On that day, the church was celebrating the western festival –Christmas, so many Christian went there to celebrate the festival. They convened the meeting, and everyone attend. Also, that is the reason why I chose this religion because I haven’t seen the meeting of the Christ. I was too curiously to see.

At the beginning, we entered the church, I found the church was magnificent. Every ornament is golden, it gave me a feeling of dignity. When everyone sat down, the main nuns leaded us to sing. it was a very strange song. It is long and I didn’t know what she sang and what it meant. I think maybe it was the own language of Christ. Then some nuns read some words, everyone repeat following. That words about Christ and Christmas.

In fact, I feel a little boring, and I don’t like it. The reason is I just read the article following the nuns and listening to the nuns telling us about the God and the Christ all the time. I nearly was asleep, however, many Christian were listen with relish. When I went there, I thought the Christian and nuns might take a party to celebrate the festival, but in fact , they just read the scripture, which are long and boring.

Few hours later, they finished the meeting, and everyone left the Church. If I can choose, I won’t go there again. However, this experience is hard to forget.It makes me know more about the western religion, and how to do the religious service in a church.

Arts & Design--- Go to an Exhibition by myself

On the 8th of March afternoon, I went to the Nanjing Museum with my friend Alex. It is located in the Zhongshan East Road. We went to there by bus 59. We entered it at 2:30p.m. We chose it because our home were very close, both lived in Yueya Lake which is near the Nanjing Museum, and I haven’t been there before. I think as Chinese we should learn more about the culture of Nanjing, so we went there.

In there I knew Nanjing Museum is one of the earliest museum in China. At that time , this museum was the modernist museum in China. Its area is about 130 thousand square metres. Nowadays, there are about 410 thousand art works collected in it especially 10 national treasures , 1000 national antiques.

Nanjing, the capital of the six dynasties, has a very long history. Wevisited many exhibition of Nanjing Museum, such as antiques, calligraphy, painting, but I love the exhibition of Nanjing cloud-pattern brocade especially, Chinese unique skill. The origin of Nanjing cloud-pattern brocade can be traced back to a long long time ago. It used to be reserved only for the emperors and the royal family members in the dynasties.In that time, brocade were very precious. I love the artwork of machine for weaving. It attracted me deeply. It is very big and many lines are very anfractuosity. I think it is too interesting and amazing, because with it weavers can make many wonderful Nanjing cloud-pattern brocade, just use different colors of silk threads for weaving brocade.

I love this exhibition, I also think it was interesting. The Nanjing cloud-pattern brocade are amazing, they are colorful and I love the colorful things very much. Many brocade have the pattern of dragon and phoenix or many flowers on it, they are very elegant and noble. I took many photos of them. This experience is meaningful and I love it. We can learn many culture of Nanjing from it. I want to have more chance to visit museums like this.

Cultural Awareness--- Go to western restaurants with my friend

On the noon of 7th in March, I ate at an Italian restaurant named “Babela’s Kitchen” with my good friend Alex. Babela is a famous Italian restaurant in Xinjiekou, and it’s on the top floor of Zhongyang Shopping Center. It is an Italian restaurant and not very expensive. I love Italian food and wanted to go shopping in that shopping center after lunch, so I chose that restaurant. Alex also agreed.


I chose pasta, chips, tofu match cheese and ice milk tea. Pasta is one of my favorite food, and it is totally different from Chinese noodle. It tastes more soft and delicious because it has special gravy. I love it very much. Tofu match cheese looked nice on the menu, so I chose it, but it was not very delicious. It tasted really strange and had strange smell .When I had a little, I didn’t want to have it any more. Italian food is totally different from the food I usually have. When we have Chinese food we often use chopsticks but for having Italian food we have to use the fork, knife and spoon. The food always has the Italian style. Italian food always loves to be the mix of more than one kind.


The environment there was really perfect. The restaurant is clean and tidy. Although there were many people there on the weekend, they did not make any noise. The atmosphere inside is fresh and warm. The temperature is high. Most of the people there were Chinese. The service there is OK. The waiters were polite, however, the food was prepared slowly because of too many people.

I recommend other people to eat at Babela. This Italian restaurant has good food and environment. I realized what different countries have different cultures. We had a great lunch at Babela.

Community Involvement & Employability Skills--volunteer for the drama

Volunteer / Work Experience (10 hours due by Feb. 8)

I was a volunteer for the basketball match of GCA and the drama named ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ last year with many students in the GCA, and two teachers lead us. One is our English teacher Ms. Mitschrich , the other is our Art teacher Ms. Hadley.

We always worked on the Saturday every week, there were many classmates worked together, the volunteer work can also make us become closer. Ms. Mitschrich and Ms. Hadley are very cute teacher, they always gave us lots of snacks as the prize for us, they made us very happy to work, and gave us energy. When we were tired , we ate some chocolate and then continue the work. We forgot having a rest.

As the volunteer of the basketball match of GCA, I drew a big poster of fighting in order to cheer our team up with my two classmates, we chose a big light yellow paper, and then we chose red pigment to write on our poster. We also wanted to draw with orange pigment but we couldn’t find. I thought that I can mix red and yellow to create orange. My group members also agreed with me. We first found the red and yellow pigment, after that one of my classmates took got some water for mixing. We finally get the orange, we felt very happy. We thought red matches yellow very well and it represents victory and energy and the poster can make the player become more excited. We worked like one person. We use black to draw a people shooting the ball. Few hours later, we finished the poster, we post the poster on the basketball court finally. I saw the importance of team spirit in that, the group is greater than the power of a person's strength.

In the following weeks, we worked for the set of the stage for the drama club. The play ‘The Taming of the Shrew ’. We made some bunches of leaves. First we cut some green paper to form like leaves. We use stapler and many staples to let the paper become curly we stapled the top of the leaves together to make the leave more 3D .Then we made more leaves together to form a tree. It spent us a lot time to finished.

During the volunteer work , I learned a lot. I know that all the drama play is not only the job for the actors. The people who in charge of the arrange of the set of the stage also very hard. They worked very hard. The work is not very easy. We always remember the name of the actors and always forget the people behind the stage . They are also heroes. I know how to work with others to increase the speed. When the play was shown, I said to my classmate proudly that the tree is made by myself! I feel very successful and happy. The play was excellent and it is full of our effort. The volunteer experience is unforgettable for me. I learnt a lot. I hope I can have more and more chances to work as a volunteer.

Personal Health--Physical Activities

PhysicalActivity (10 hours due by Feb. 8)


During this winter holiday, I attended the karate club in the gym of longjiang in Nanjing. Our club is in charge of studying and training the kungfu of karate, I have trained from 7 pm to 9 pm at night, four times a week. I have got 24 hours totally for my karate training.


Karate is a famous kungfu made from Japan and it has a long history. In Japan, many old men can play karate for protect themselves and keep fit. karate is a kind of fistfight, it has high kill and wound ,not similar like Chinese Kungfu. There are many competitions about karate in Japan. Now, many Chinese also learn karate to keep fit and learn to protect themselves. During the holiday, I went to learn the karate with my friend Anna , she is not the student in GCA, but we are good friend.


Learning karate is not a easy thing to do. The first day, I saw our coach ,he is a strong man, although he is very young, just 28 years old. He told us learn karate should have a strong physique necessary, so we had half an hour or 45 minutes to warm up and exercise our physical stamina on each class. Our coach is outgoing and humorous after class but strict during class. We shouldn’t talk to other member s and laugh when the coach talking and training. If you don’t obey the rule, you will be punished by coach for the extra exercise about physical stamina. We should wear our costume of karate correctly. If we wear the back of costume in the front, it’s a big problem. It means the coach is dead. In karate, respect the coach is very important for the trainee , if we do that, we shouldn’t be trained for that class, and arrive at class on time is also important.

In my first class, when I finished the physical stamina for 40 minutes, I was tired enough. After that I was training the normal actions about karate and kicked the bundle, I was too tired to stand up when I finished the class. I felt very hard to do karate but I have the confidence enough and never gave up easily. In the following class, coach taught us many manners if we met the danger how to use the karate to protect ourselves. I t helped me very much I think.
